Dragon Warlords Review

Dragon Warlords by GIGL studios is a free real time strategy game that uses a fantasy theme of warriors, mages and archer type units along with interactive spells and defensive towers. The game is a base developer and not really a base builder. The base is already there and your task is to upgrade your troop and resource producing buildings.

The resources for the game are Food, Stone, Wood and Gold. Developing these buildings will allow you to upgrade your troops and spells and that's the whole key to the game. The higher you can upgrade your army the easier wins will be for you. So this is a timer game where you need to make upgrades and then wait for them to finish or speed them up by spending premium currency.

You base is a combination of resource and troop buildings

The game has both a quest map where you battle the computer and PVP system where you fight against the armies of other players. To battle in PVP it charges you a food cost. It will select an opponent for you based on your level and then give you the option of reselecting by spending more resources.

Battling is fun I think the system works pretty well you will race against a timer to make your way from one side of the battlefield to the other. The opposing army will meet you along the way and you will also have to take down their defending towers. Once you battle your way to the other side you can then destroy the opponent's gate and that is how you win. The game features a leaderboard to track your progress.

Work your way up the PVP leaderboard

When the battle starts you will be able to select a couple of your units right away and then add more units throughout the battle. Which units you select is a big factor as units have different methods of attacking. Is a melee unit the right choice or an archer unit. Maybe it should be a mage instead. Selecting the wrong ones for the enemy towers and defenders can cost you the battle. This is where practice makes you better and the strategy system kicks in.

Battle your way to the enemy's gate before the timer runs out

Spells play a factor in the battles as well and there are quite a few including fireballs, freeze spells and shields to protect your units from taking damage.  Some spells are free to use as much as you want based on a cooldown timer. Other spells have limited free uses and then cost gems to use, this is where the paying player can have an advantage.

Neat little upgrade screen is a nice touch for keeping up with your base

I have not gotten far enough into this game yet to unlock the special units but eventually if you play enough you get access to other races like Dwarves and Elves which can add an even deeper high fantasy experience. This game is off to a pretty good start and is certainly a fun time killer. I did experience a few crashes and server issues of not not being able to connect but hopefully that is being fixed.

Pros:

  • Quick little battles are a fun time killer
  • Nice selection of units, spells and towers to build up
  • Does have a strategy element to it.

Cons:

  • A few bugs that need to be worked out.
  • The best spells eventually have a gem cost associated with use.

Overall Score
3.5 out of 5.
